Matthew Bloomfield
was born in Canada and raised in the USA. His Masters Degree is
in Teaching English & Foreign Languages (TESL/TEFL), and he
is fluent in English, Chinese, French and Indonesian. Matthew is
a highly experienced teacher, trainer and performer with a unique
combination of skills who offers services in the following areas:
MC/Event Host

Ford China Annual Party 2007 The
Rapping Professor
Matthew has hosted Annual Parties, Sales
Conferences, Leadership Programs, Charity Benefits, International
Conventions, Art Galas, Weddings and many other events for multinational
clients including Ford China, Air France, Philips, TycoFlow, ToastMasters
Intl, Getty Images, Canadian Consulate of Shanghai, The Four Seasons
Hotel, Le Meridien SheShan and many more. With his language and
performance skills, Matthew entertains and makes feel comfortable
audiences of a wide range of nationalities, ages and ranks.
In addition, as ‘The Rapping Professor’,
Matthew offers a customized entertainment service that you’ve likely
never seen or heard before. He writes, records and performs an original
song or rap which includes the key people, themes, sponsors, organizers
etc. in the lyrics. If you’ve never heard your name or your company
name mentioned live onstage and on a DVD, it’s a treat you won’t
soon forget! DVDs can be burned for each event guest, so they can
relive the event experience and share it with family, colleagues
and friends. You’ve got to try it!
The Rapping Professor’s performances are
very interactive! It can be arranged so that the song or rap lyrics
are distributed to event guests in advance of the event, so they
can become familiar with it. Then at the event, The Rapping Professor
may go out into the audience and invite people to join in! It’s
great fun, and, in a word, unique!
Commercial Voiceover Talent
Matthew’s rich tenor speaking and singing
voice has been featured in countless radio, TV and cable ads, corporate
videos, educational content and more. Those of you in Shanghai are
sure to recognize his Shanghai Media Group radio ads: SMG—Your BETTER
CHOICE! He is also the voice of the film trailer for China Venture
Films’debut film Milk & Fashion. Some of Matthew’s other recent
voiceover clients include KFC, IBM, Siemens, Disney, SAP, Mitsubishi,
Volkswagen and many more. Matthew is equally comfortable doing straight
corporate voices as he is with all manner of humorous national and
regional accents and character voices. Just click here if you’d
like to hear some of Matthew’s voice work.
In addition to providing both spoken and
singing voices, Matthew is a top-notch creative copywriter and editor,
so he can play more than one role in taking your advertising or
promotional audio project from conception to completion.
Corporate Trainer
Matthew’s facility with languages, engaging
personality and long experience working with both Chinese and Westerners
in an impressive variety of roles has made him a highly effective
trainer. Some of the topics Matthew is qualified to present include:
Cross-cultural: USA and China Host Country
Values; Western & Chinese Cross-Cultural Issues; Tailoring Presentation
Content for the Western Audience; Daily Living in Shanghai; CWQ
National Values Testing and MBTI Personality Testing.
Some of the organizations Matthew has done
cross-cultural training for include Cornell University; the Cartus
(formerly Cendant) Corporation, which handles all aspects of executive
relocation for clients such as GE, Philips, Tomson and Procter&Gamble;
Pricoa, the training wing of Prudential; and Shi Bisset & Associates,
a Shanghai-based Organizational Development company and certified
ITAP member, whose clients include Dow-Corning, TycoFlow, Bosch,
BASF and many more.
Language Skills: Matthew has been teaching
both English and Chinese for over twenty years, and obtained his
Masters Degree in TESL/TEFL from Ohio University in 2001. He’s highly
experienced in many different instruction environments including
corporate, language school, private and small group, and university.
Matthew served on the faculty of the English Language Center of
Macau University from 2002 to 2004 before relocating to Shanghai,
teaching both undergrad and graduate students and peer supervising
fellow instructors.
Matthew is currently the English instructor
for the East China Architecture and Design Institute (ECADI), where
his students are managing major projects such as the Expo Center
2010 and the new Pudong Airport Terminal. Recent private clients
include top level senior executives at Dow-Corning, BNP Paribas
and other multinational corporations. Some of the places Matthew
has taught before include Berlitz Interational, Web-International,
University of Cincinnati MBA Program, Saybot LLC, New Oriental School,
TalkdaTalk English and more.
Teaching Chinese. Matthew is effective
at teaching Chinese to Westerners because he went through intensive
Mandarin training programs at both Cornell and Beijing University
in the late 1980s, and so has a strong sense of the particular challenges
the language poses. At Beijing University, Matthew’s roommate was
the famous ‘DaShan’ (Mark Rowswell), and people often comment on
Matthew’s standard Mandarin pronunciation. Being a gifted musician
helps as well, as Matthew can help students to hear and appreciate
the four tones of Mandarin, essential for being understood in the
language.
Teaching English. Matthew offers invaluable
assistance to English learners, including senior Chinese executives
who may have worked in multinational companies for many years and
who must present in English to native speaker audiences. Often,
these individuals are ‘fluent’ in English but in fact are not easily
understood. Matthew does intensive videotaped feedback work with
them on their pace, accent, syllable and sentence stress and intonation,
and equally importantly, provides insight into the types of ice-breakers,
humor and content most likely to create rapport with Western audiences.
A current client, Asia-Pacific Manager for a major US-based manufacturer,
recently received huge praise from the Global CEO on his English
improvement, on the occasion of his opening speech and press conference
at a major new plant opening.
As a both natural and experienced speaker
and performer, Matthew is able to help clients deal with presentation
issues such as audience interaction and body language, nervousness,
speaking too quickly and much more. Matthew is happy to meet with
you to discuss your language learning needs.

and Raps for Events of All Sorts
Matthew blends his talents to create training
content you simply will not find anywhere else. In his popular Rap
Teambuilding Activity, for example, Matthew divides groups into
teams and provides them the framework of a short rap, with a few
gaps in it. Teams then fill in the blanks and choreograph a team
performance to a musical rap beat, complete with team rap style‘uniforms’
of matching do-rags (bandanas), bling-bling (gaudy jewelry) and
more. At his VID you’ll see the Ford China CEO and other key VIPs
rapping The Ford China Theme Rap along with Matthew. Teams are often
amazed to find they actually enjoy rapping, and working together
in a communication form they had no experience in expands their
horizons in unexpected ways.
Matthew is also perfectly comfortable delivering
other kinds of team-building activities, stress management workshops
and a wide variety of other engaging content.
Actor and Musician
Matthew has appeared in several Chinese-language
television shows, including KaiXin GongYu (‘Happy Apartment’), OK
Xintiandi, Plan A (A计划) and Who’s A Comedian? (一小城名), where he and
his American performing partner reached the final round, against
Chinese native speaker competition! You’ll also see him as the band
leader on a nationally aired Lensas DC info-mercial featuring star
actor David Wu.
Matthew is an accomplished songwriter,
singer and rapper, having composed and performed all the songs on
his debut CD Rap-CD In Blue, available at Amazon.com. Matthew brings
a musicality to everything he does, and finds music and rhyme are
highly effective and contagious forms of communication in his language
instruction and corporate training work as well.
